SF.net lost because the site is incredibly slow, it's usability is somewhere between "whatever" and "bend over", they keep moving things around for no apparent benefit and for quite a while the site assumed visitors weren't potential contributors.

I started hosting code there using CVS in 2000 and it has certainly improved since then, but I recently pushed a branch to GitHub and there's just no comparison.
