I started de-googling a long time ago, part of it was an iPhone (12 mini), 5 years later I really felt like de-Appling as well. The Appstore is a cesspool, privacy concerns are about the same as Google now (or perhaps always were?).
I went with GrapheneOS. Very good experience, but not without Google Play (store and services). It's all sandboxed, so presumably I'm only leaking consciously chosen data. It's really aimed at security, not so much de-googling. Something like Murena's /e/OS is much more aimed at de-Googling, but as GrapheneOS devs will usually be quick to point out here, they are "quite poor" with their security.
A de-Googled functional appstore on a FairPhone (+ with all the GrapheneOS required security bells and wistles) would be ideal for me. But it's still either optimal security focussed OR de-Googling/de-big-teching focused. Yes there is f-droid, but there are too many apps that require the Google services (like banking).
Atm 1 app does not work, one of my banking apps required the highest tier of Google control. I will happily install on devices that have been years without security updates though :s
Overall the GrapheneOS experience (base launcher etc) is very clean, fast, minimal, ad free.
Saying that holding a particular opinion makes you irrelevant is not gaslighting? It's not nice to respond to a frustrated developer by saying they don't exist. It feels comparable to saying someone's concerns are not real, which does amount to gaslighting to me.
No one says graphene os doesn’t exist, or the developers don’t exist, just that their opinions don’t matter because they are a miniscule fraction of the market. 2% of active devices drives no decisions at Google.
Thats a long time for a critical security patch to land (like this one [0], although it looks like it has been fixed now, at least in their alpha channel, which is annoying (not their fault) because we really need this patch).
Installed GrapheneOS on my Pixel 10 yesterday, only used the stock rom to start the installer... Am feeling a little unconfortable due to this situation: [0]. Hope this gets better. Really feeling the dislike for Google on this one.
It was shipped in the latest GrapheneOS release. It's currently in the Alpha channel due to reports of carrier compatibility issues for calls which are fixed in today's release. Today's release should be able to reach Beta in a couple hours and then Stable in under 24 hours.
That linked article really blows apart 10-years of Pixel security posturing. Numerous press articles about the security of its Titan chip, "most secure phone ever," etc.
(HN types would snicker, "Google's getting all your data, it's not secure" but that wasn't the conversation.)

The titan chip is still secure. I do not know about "the most secure," but it is very good. The linked article does not relate to the Titan chip anyway. The article is about privilege escalation in the modem, which is a separate component with its own privileges that does not automatically translate to the AP, userspace/kernel, or titan unless there is a chain attack we are unaware of. The reduced attack surface is because of Google's isolation design.

I've been using some GLM5.2 via Mistral lately and it doesn't have this... tone... But it makes some mistakes sometimes that Claude wouldn't.
Idk, just the idea that this was artificial expanded, makes me feel anyone could have written it, I could ask Claude for it directly. There will be no insight, even though there may be. What is happening to me, I am not anti AI.

Yeah I lost my phone some months ago. Quite the panick because I am also MS365 admin for 2 orgs... 3 hr later a trucker called my wife using the iPhone emergency contact feature (what a hero). Now I bought an iPad that stays at home and has all the apps. Honestly, I should also put a second phone somewhere else.
Also frees me up to experiment a bit more on the Phone side (just got a Pixel 10 with GrapheneOS), although, so far it all just works (with Google Services of course).
It's annoying that you really do need either Android or iOS nowadays. If only we could virtualize one of those platforms properly (and free as in freedomly).
