It feels like there is "backpressure" that has been backed into our current world that makes people like Snowden and Assange an impossibility. The collective control of politics, media, and corporations have built a society that is inoculated to truth and no longer have a response to evil.
Even when the truth is told to us directly to our faces, no one seems to care.
IMO the underlying reason for this is one or more of:
1) Americans are [statistically speaking] doing very well, high GDP, lots of consumer products to buy, lots of entertainment, lots of cheap food... and wikileaks is not doing anything to help but maybe destroy this.
2) Americans are also doing very poorly, the bottom 25% have bigger problems to deal with than wikileaks. Why would they care if the CIA is watching them if they can't afford next month's rent?
3) Information overload: Similiar to 1, we get overloaded with things we ought to care about, climate, wiki leaks, wars.... it's too much and people really just want. #1.
Re 2): because you can't have a handful of extremely wealthy people in a completely equal world; so one wonders if enough accidental topplings of foreign democracies would not an "inequality" enforcement agency make?
Reading a bit, it's become somewhat apparent to me that that little independent government agency is the instability enforcer in order to sustain the world as a set of abstractions to keep people artificially poor: from cartels (involvement in Contra cocaine trafficking), to toppling of budding democracies (IIRC, Iran 1953) ... further revealing they and their masters consider that progress is a zero-sum game for them.
What framework do you purpose? Humans can't even agree on whether or not such values even exist let alone which ones.
Lets say we figure all that out and we pick a core universal morality. If they are smarter than us than how would we know the alignment worked? We would be unable to detect their lies and schemes.
This is a meme video but I think it hits the nail on the head.
TLDR: AI will force global online digital ID for everyone that uses the internet for the exact reason you mentioned. And that would forever change free speech forever allowing the powers that be to put the genie "back in the bottle" so to speak.
Thankfully for now this dragon is a hydra. Too many paths to block for now. The whole TPM fiasco with windows is preparation to put the genie back in the bottle. Soon, much sooner than I would like you will need a Global ID to access the internet, which will require an "internet safe operating system". It's only a matter of time. Get your sneakers ready folks.
My Opinion on that: It would be branded as unsafe and something only terrorists and extremists use. Aside from the propaganda campaigns that would run 24/7 to influence public opinion it would (and will) be outlawed to run an unmonitored personal compute system. I'll bet they will use the fact that open models can generate c-sam materials.
