I've been trying to motivate myself to read more. I also have ADHD and the constant content drip is like catnip, despite my best efforts (switching to a Minimal Phone, disabling my youtube feed/history, etc...)
I used to be a voracious reader and I LOVED books. They were the distraction I used to escape the world, rather than youtube videos. Or I'd pick up my guitar. Or teach myself how to set up an IRC server. I miss the days when I had that kind of attention and desperately wish I could get it back.
It is def possible. There's a quack on Tiktok claiming ADHD is 'the failure of exec function' and 'no matter what you won't achieve your goals' which is definitely not true. But then he is selling pills, so it makes sense.
ADHD can worsen if:
1. you avoid sunshine and daily walks in nature.
2. don't sleep early and skip morning exercise and breakfast.
3. watch short videos or even long ones for 'fun'.
After taking care of these three, the next step is to claim your attention back by reading long books. It's not that difficult. As all real ADHDs know, even doing toilet needs dopamine and is hard to do (boring). So I place a book on the ledge beside me, and when I toilet, I just read. I've read four such novels in two months now, and all in the toilet!
I discovered now that I can read anything just as fast and my attention stays and my brain works better. Try it. Trollope is great, but only if you're a overthinker like me. I recommend Lewis's "The Monk" if you're into morality/ethics + adventure, or Lermontov's "A hero of our time" if you want to see poetry in prose, and also learn a lot of street wisdom (the kind we ADHDs usually lack). I read both BTW (see my blog for reviews, link on my HN profile).
And finally, don't ever be discouraged. That mental model is easy to fall into, but there are many mental models! :)
Starting Oct 22, packages from foreign and Canadian online pharmacies will be prohibited from entering the U.S. if the same medication is sold domestically or if the foreign pharmacy targets U.S. buyers.
Yeah, it would...and yet, they covered that as well with another recent change:
Packages from foreign and Canadian online pharmacies will be prohibited from entering the U.S. if the same medication is sold domestically or if the foreign pharmacy targets U.S. buyers.
It was rarely enforced, prior to what GP explicitely called out as a recent change, that will come into effect October 22. We'll see what happens by end-of-year, though I wouldn't count on pharmacies replacing and re-shipping
Can't argue with you there. There's a ton of cool projects that people have vibecoded, and exist in domains where the fact that it's possibly insecure/poorly optimised/unmaintainable by humans doesn't really matter much. e.g. porting retro systems to, or writing new utilities for MiSTer FPGA. I love the platform, and the more stuff I can run on it, the better. Bugs are annoying, but not critical. The community gets software that may have never existed otherwise.
But still, somehow, when I see a Claudish README, it instantly gives me the ick. Write about your project. Tell us why you built it. Talk about the problems the bot helped you work through. I'm not going to judge you for not being able to code it all up yourself - but at least write the README in your own voice and tell me why you cared enough to do it.
I recently switched to a Minimal Phone with an e-ink screen, and it sucks (which is the point, obviously). One of the things that sucks is NFC. The payment terminals constantly have a hard time grabbing it, and when they do, they often throw a bizaare "multiple cards detected" error, which is extra strange, since I only have one card stored.
I have a separate sleeve wallet, which I can attach to the back of the phone magnetically that contains my physical debit card + drivers license. If I lost the phone, there's probably about a 50/50 chance that I'd still have the wallet sleeve in my pocket, so I'd at least have my ID and a way to pay for things...but if I lost them both, I'd be pretty screwed.
Convenience is nice, but switching to a shitty phone made me realise I can live without a lot of convenient things, and it's safer not to keep all your eggs in one black rectangle.
A lot of their screencaps show an interface that screams Lisp Machine/Genera...I can't find any actual references on the site or in the docs, but the visual nod feels intentional. (disclaimer: I am not a developer, just a devops engineer who nerds out on computer history)
I imagine it would...I haven't tried the core, but most of them maintain the original outputs over the VGA port. Even if, for some bizarre reason it didn't, you could just enable the vga_scaler and force it.
Doesn't matter where we're going, as long as we get there FAST!
It's a sickness.
