Comenius! I'll be damned—this is the first time I've seen anyone actually reading his Orbis Pictus. There's a country whose educational system basically revolves around Comenius (the Czech Republic). And even there I don't personally know anyone who I'd be 100% sure has actually read the whole book!
Kinda curious why You didn't go for the Fenix 7 / 7Pro line? AFAIK the "big" addition on the 8 was phonecalls/microphone on the watch and some increased water resistance for diving. All that for maybe 200-300USD price hike.
I actually had Fenix 6 before and did and impulsive upgrade to Fenix 8 while diving on holidays. I'm very happy with it, including the microphone, sometimes even use it to take calls, it is surprisingly handy when e.g. holding a kid in one hand.
back in my day we used to upcycle old 18650s from old laptop batteries to use for Nokia phones. Since back in the day phone batteries were basically just insert-in and held by a clip-on backplate, it was just a question of fabricating some sort of a replacement backplate, tape on some batteries, reuse the charging protection board with the connector from the original phone battery and wire it together. It easily doubled the size, looked like a prop from an amateur terrorist movie, but battery life was a week+ ;-)
not a spark plug. They call it "armature in a circle", but that's somewhat generic.
Bosch used to do the first magnetos / dynamos in the early 1900s motorbikes / cars. The principle is similar to this day - one rotating magnetic field within one static. You can do all kinds of shenanigans and combinations of permanent magnets / coils where it's either the electric current generating a magnetic field or the magnetic field generating an electric current. Depending whether You want the movement to generate electricity or the electricity to generate movement.
In the first magnetos (the thing that uses the engine rotation in order to generate a current that then makes a spark in the spark plug) they used permanently magnetized exterior plating and a rotating winding. That's sort of what You see in the logo - two coil windings rotating in their housing.
any tips on how to reliably get that "thicker gauge" one? I've been craving it since maybe 20y ago when I got a roll from my old stint in a restaurant. I've tried buying some rolls by "heavy duty" labels and these days it's just as likely to be one of those thin "look at it funny and it tears".
Costco sell two different types of foil, one is shorter and has blue packaging and the other is longer and has red packaging... It's the red one which is much thicker.
I'm not sure about the "question nobody asked". Bluetooth is perhaps a gimmick, but in all seriousness an electrically actuated derailleur is a blessing for anyone doing audax / long distance. I have my wrists damaged enough from sitting at a keyboard all day. I don't have to add to it whenever I need to shift gears on a bike.
I see the point of it being a potential e-waste in 10 years, but I'm not sure the mechanical route was much better in that respect (looking at you, shimano shifter-derailleur-brake compatibility table that currently runs a few pages long even before adding all the Di2 stuff)
BTW - "what" do You need a 48-spoke hub for? Are You building cargo bikes in Your spare time? I'm not trying to be snarky - the "all our bikes load limit is 120kg bicycle included" has long been bothering me as well (100kg rider), so... kinda curious about Your side projects
